BIMSTEC Nations Hold Talks on Connecting with ASEAN: Thai MFA
Bangkok (Sputnik) - The Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs highlighted BIMSTEC talks aimed at enhancing connectivity with ASEAN and other regional frameworks.
The Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs highlighted key discussions during the BIMSTEC (Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation) meeting, with a focus on enhancing regional collaboration.
The Thai delegation proposed a joint document on earthquake relief, aligning with Thailand's 'pro-BIMSTEC' theme, which emphasises Prosperity, Resilience, and Openness.
The meeting underscored the importance of addressing non-traditional security threats, including natural disasters, online threats, and other emerging challenges.
Thailand's proposal on earthquake relief received positive support from the seven BIMSTEC member countries, reinforcing solidarity in the face of disaster.
"We are trying to address issues of non-traditional security, meaning natural disaster, non-traditional threats and online threats. All these are under non-traditional security threat," the Thai MFA said.
Further, BIMSTEC is exploring deeper connections with other regional frameworks, with an MoU set to be signed between BIMSTEC and the Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA), as well as with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC).
Discussions are ongoing to establish links between BIMSTEC and other regional and subregional organisations, such as Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) and Asia Cooperation Dialogue (ACD), fostering a network of interconnected groupings in the region.
This initiative, led by Thailand, aims to strengthen regional cooperation and promote greater stability and resilience across BIMSTEC nations and beyond.
