At the LAAD (Latin America Aerospace and Defence) exhibition in Rio de Janeiro, a joint venture between India and Russia, BrahMos Aerospace, has unveiled what it claims to be the "fastest cruise missile system in the world."
The missile system is designed to achieve speeds up to three times the speed of sound, making it the fastest of its kind, according to a company representative speaking to Sputnik.
"This is the fastest cruise missile system available, capable of reaching speeds three times that of sound, and it can target any kind of objective, whether on land or at sea," the BrahMos representative said.
The missile, weighing 3 tons, has a flight range of 290 kilometers and can ascend to altitudes of up to 15 kilometers. In terms of speed and range, it outperforms conventional missiles on the market by three times, while its combat effectiveness is reportedly "nine times" superior.
BrahMos Aerospace highlighted the long-standing history of friendship and cooperation between Brazil and India, and the company is optimistic that the armed forces of the South American country will take a keen interest in the missile system. "We are optimistic," the representative remarked.
The LAAD exhibition is the largest defense and security forum in Latin America. This year, it is being held in Rio de Janeiro from April 1 to 4, with over 200 delegations from 40 countries in attendance. The event is expected to draw more than 45,000 visitors.
Technically, the fastest cruise missile currently in operation is Russia's Kh-47M2 "Kinzhal," which can reach speeds of up to Mach 10 or 12,250 km/h. While often classified as an aeroballistic missile due to its flight trajectory, it could be considered a cruise missile as it utilizes aerodynamic control during flight. Among ballistic missiles, the fastest is the Soviet-developed R-36M2 "Voevoda" (NATO classification SS-18 Satan), which can reach speeds of 23–25 Mach or 28,000 km/h.
