Easter Truce Highlights Russia-Ukraine Push for Extended Ceasefire Agreement: Analysis
MOSCOW, April 21 (Sputnik) - The Easter truce announced by Russian President Vladimir Putin on Saturday shows that both Russia and Ukraine aim for a longer ceasefire deal, experts told Sputnik.
The truce came into effect at 6:00 p.m. Moscow time (15:00 GMT) on Saturday and lasted until midnight from Sunday to Monday (21:00 GMT on Sunday). Putin said that he assumed Ukraine would follow Russia's example. The Russian Defence Ministry said on Sunday that the Ukrainian armed forces continued to attack Russian territories.
John Mueller, a political scientist at Ohio State University, believes that the temporary ceasefire will eventually lead to a long-term truce that is needed by both Moscow and Kyiv.
"I can't be sure, of course, but I certainly hope a long-lasting ceasefire will emerge out of the Easter truce: it's what both sides need. And then, with the killing halted, extended talks could begin over the remaining issues," Mueller said.
Roderick Kiewiet, professor of Political Science at the California Institute of Technology, said that the truce declared by Putin shows that Russia wants to bring the Ukraine conflict to an end.
"Any truce is better than no truce, but at this point it only suggests (barely) that Putin is interested in winding down this conflict," Kiewiet stated.
Another expert polled by Sputnik, Kanishkan Sathasivam, a professor in the Political Science department at Salem State University, Massachusetts, recalled that US President Donald Trump wanted Russia and Ukraine to reach a comprehensive ceasefire by Easter.
Putin’s proposed truce is an attempt to "show the US side that Russia still wants peace," Sathasivam said. The expert, however, doubts that any long-term peace deal could happen anytime soon.
M. V. Ramana, the Simons Chair in Disarmament, Global and Human Security at the School of Public Policy and Global Affairs at the University of British Columbia, has estimated the chances of a sustainable ceasefire as low, adding that a 30-day full ceasefire previously proposed by the US did not come into effect.
Putin said in March that he agreed with the ceasefire proposal but insisted that it must lead to long-term peace and address the root causes of the conflict.
