NEW DELHI, April 29 (Sputnik) - Pakistan violated a ceasefire along the line of control with India in the Kashmir Valley for the fifth consecutive day, the Indian army said on Tuesday.
"During the night of April 28-29, the Pakistan Army resorted to unprovoked small arms firing across the Line of Control in areas opposite Kupwara and Baramulla districts, as well as the Akhnoor sector. The Indian Army responded in a measured and effective manner to the provocation," the army said in a statement, as quoted by the NDTV broadcaster.
According to the army, no casualties have been reported.
At the same time, India is considering closing its airspace and ports to Pakistani maritime and air carriers, the Economic Times reported on Tuesday, citing people familiar with the matter.
The move could affect state-owned Pakistan International Airlines (PIA), which uses Indian airspace to reach several Southeast Asian destinations, including Singapore, Thailand and Malaysia. If the airspace is closed, the planes would have to take a longer route.
Meanwhile, the main opposition Indian National Congress (INC) party has called on the country's Prime Minister Narendra Modi to hold a special session of parliament over the terrorist attack in Kashmir that triggered the escalation of tensions between India and Pakistan.
"At this moment, when unity and solidarity is essential, Opposition believes that it is important to convene a special session of both houses of Parliament at the earliest. This will be a powerful demonstration of our collective resolve and will to deal with the brutal terror attack in Pahalgam on innocent citizens on 22 April 2025. It is our fond hope that the session will be accordingly convened," Mallikarjun Kharge, INC's president and the leader of opposition in the upper house of parliament said in a letter to Modi.
Another opposition leader, Rahul Gandhi, also wrote a letter to Modi, requesting a special parliamentary session.
On April 22, a terrorist attack took place near the town of Pahalgam in India's Jammu and Kashmir, killing 26 people, including one Nepalese citizen. A group of terrorists from the Resistance Front, affiliated with the Lashkar-e-Taiba group*, claimed responsibility for the attack. Following the attack, the Indian Cabinet Committee on Security decided to reduce the staff of the embassies of India and Pakistan in each other's countries, suspend the Indus Waters Treaty and close the only functioning land border crossing between the two countries.
In response to the restrictions imposed by Indian authorities, Pakistan's National Security Committee said the country would regard any attempt by India to divert the flow of the Indus River as an act of war, announced an immediate suspension of "all trade with India, including to and from any third country through Pakistan," and closed its airspace to all Indian flights.
