India Reports New Ceasefire Violation by Pakistan in Kashmir
NEW DELHI (Sputnik) - The Indian Army has reported yet another ceasefire breach by Pakistani forces along the Line of Control (LoC) in Kashmir Valley, marking the 11th consecutive violation, a spokesperson for India’s Defense Ministry said on Monday.
"During the night of May 4 and 5, Pakistan Army posts resorted to unprovoked small arms fire across the LoC in areas opposite Kupwara, Baramulla, Poonch, Rajouri, Mendhar, Naushera, Sunderbani, and Akhnoor in J&K [Jammu and Kashmir]," the spokesperson was quoted as saying by the Hindu newspaper.
The Indian Army responded to the firing "promptly and proportionately," the official added. No casualties or damage have been reported so far.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday discussed with the commanders of the Indian Air Force and Indian Navy the readiness of their respective branches of the armed forces in the context of the response being considered in the wake of the Pahalgam terror attack, the Indian Express reported.
India and Pakistan share a 3,323-kilometer (2,065-mile)-long border, part of which is an international border. There is also a line of control in Jammu and Kashmir, as well as the Actual Ground Position Line in the disputed area of the Siachen Glacier.
Tensions between India and Pakistan escalated following a terrorist attack near the town of Pahalgam in the Indian-administered region of Jammu and Kashmir on April 22, in which a group of armed Islamist militants killed 26 people. The terrorist-linked Resistance Front insurgent group claimed responsibility for the attack.
