Russian and Ukrainian officials are poised to meet in the Turkish city of Istanbul on Thursday for their first direct negotiations in more than three years.
Russian presidential aide Vladimir Medinsky will lead the Russian delegation, which also includes Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Galuzin, Deputy Defense Minister Alexander Fomin and Chief of the Main Directorate of the General Staff of the Armed Forces Igor Kostyukov.
Russian President Vladimir Putin proposed over the weekend that Russia and Ukraine resume direct talks without preconditions in Istanbul on May 15 to address the root causes of the conflict in Ukraine. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that he wanted to go to Turkey to meet with Putin in person.
A spokesman of the Turkish presidential administration told RIA Novosti on Wednesday that President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's office had no information about the program of the planned talks between Russia and Ukraine.
