The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) will begin its two-day 46th summit in the Malaysian capital of Kuala Lumpur on Monday.
The summit will include high-level meetings such as the ASEAN Gulf Cooperation Council, the ASEAN-GCC-China Summit and various leaders' interfaces with parliamentarians, youth and business councils.
The series of events aims to reinforce ASEAN's commitments to peace, stability and sustainable development in the region.
One of the key issues expected to dominate discussions is the impact of new U.S. trade tariffs. A source close to the summit organisers told Sputnik that economic relations with major global powers—particularly Washington—will be at the center of talks. The recently announced tariffs range from 10% on Singapore to nearly 50% on Cambodia, affecting ASEAN countries with strong trade surpluses with the U.S.
Although the U.S. has granted a 90-day delay before the tariffs take effect, ASEAN member states are scrambling to formulate responses. Some, like Vietnam, are already entering a second round of bilateral talks with Washington. Others, including Thailand, have yet to begin negotiations, raising questions about the bloc’s ability to present a unified front.
In addition to trade, leaders are expected to revisit the stalled Five-Point Consensus on Myanmar, adopted in 2021 after the military seized power. Myanmar’s political leadership remains excluded from ASEAN’s top-level gatherings due to its failure to meet key commitments, including initiating peace talks with the opposition.
Following the main summit, two more significant meetings are scheduled: the second ASEAN–Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) summit and the inaugural ASEAN–GCC–China trilateral summit. Both aim to deepen economic cooperation amid global uncertainty, with a focus on diversifying partnerships and addressing supply chain disruptions.
