MOSCOW (Sputnik) - The US Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) has sent employees to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) to revise or eliminate dozens of rules restricting the circulation of firearms by July 4, The Washington Post reported on Friday, citing sources familiar with the matter.
The initial goal was to change 47 rules, which is a reference to Donald Trump's status as the 47th US president, according to sources. However, ATF and DOGE staff are now prepared to exceed this target, planning to revise over 50 regulations, the newspaper wrote.
In the meantime, efforts are underway to simplify federal Form 4473, which gun buyers must fill out. The form could be reduced from seven pages to three, with several questions combined into a single section, the report said.
Trump created DOGE as one of his first executive orders after being sworn in as the 47th president of the United States. Businessman Elon Musk was appointed to head the new department, whose priorities include cutting costs and restructuring federal agencies. In late May, Musk announced that he was leaving the Trump administration.
Guns are deeply ingrained in American society and the nation's political discourse. The Second Amendment of the US constitution ensures the right to bear arms, with approximately one-third of American adults reporting personal firearm ownership.
