KALININGRAD (SPUTNIK) - A formal handover ceremony for the Tamal missile frigate, Project 11356, took place at the United Shipbuilding Corporation’s Yantar Shipyard in Kaliningrad.
The event was attended by Vice Admiral Sanjay Jagjit Singh, Commander of the Indian Navy’s Western Fleet. Following the signing of the acceptance certificate, the Russian flag was lowered on the ship and replaced with the national flag of India and the ensign of the Indian Navy.
“The Tamal frigate has successfully completed acceptance trials with the participation of the Indian commission. This is a modern and multifunctional ship, boasting strong combat capabilities against surface, land, underwater, and air targets,” JSC Shipyard Yantar website quotes Andrey Puchkov, CEO of the United Shipbuilding Corporation, as saying. “Although construction of ships of this project has been completed in Russia, our specialists will continue to provide necessary support for the building of two more Project 11356 ships at Indian shipyards.”
The Tamal frigate meets all current requirements of modern naval warfare, according to Shipyad Yantar. Its radar systems are capable of timely detecting all types of aerial threats, including modern low-flying anti-ship missiles. The ship features a reliable air defence system, based on the Shtil-1 surface-to-air missile system with vertical launch, developed and produced by the Almaz-Antey Air and Space Defence Corporation.
The ship’s armament fully corresponds to modern, including emerging, threats. Its artillery weapons — consisting of 100 mm and 30 mm gun mounts — combined with an electronic warfare system, can repel attacks by drones and effectively counter unmanned boats.
