BANGKOK, August 4 (Sputnik) - A state visit of Malaysia's King Sultan Ibrahim to Russia at the invitation of Russian President Vladimir Putin will open a new chapter in relations between the two countries, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said on Monday.
"The visit opens a new chapter in bilateral relations between Malaysia and Russia and is expected to foster strategic cooperation in various fields, including bilateral trade, investments, higher education, technology and innovation, as well as direct people-to-people contacts between the two nations," the Malaysian prime minister said on X.
This visit is historic and of paramount importance, as Sultan Ibrahim is the first Malaysian head to come to Russia on a state visit since the establishment of diplomatic relations between Malaysia and Russia in 1967, the Prime Minister said, adding that Malaysia possess the potential to attract investments and new technologies from Russia, particularly in energy, aerospace, defense, and smart farming.
Sultan Ibrahim is expected to visit Russia from August 5–10 and will hold talks with Putin and Rustam Minnikhanov, head of the Republic of Tatarstan.
