India, Philippines Elevate Relations to Strategic Partnership - PM Modi
NEW DELHI (Sputnik) - Indian and Philippine authorities have agreed to elevate the level of bilateral cooperation to a strategic partnership, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Tuesday.
"Dialogues at all levels and cooperation in all sectors have long been the framework of our relations. Today, the President and I held a detailed discussion on issues of mutual cooperation, regional problems and the international situation. It is gratifying that today we have decided to raise our relations to the level of a strategic partnership," Modi said at a joint press conference with Philippine President Ferdinand Romualdez Marcos Jr. in New Delhi.
Modi said that both countries had developed an extensive action plan.
"Our bilateral trade is constantly growing and has exceeded the $3 billion mark. To further strengthen this position, our priority will be to finalize the revision of the Free Trade Agreement between India and ASEAN [Association of Southeast Asian Nations] as soon as possible. We have also decided to work on concluding a bilateral preferential trade agreement," he added.
The Indian Prime Minister emphasized that the constantly strengthening defense ties between his country and the Philippines were a symbol of a deepening mutual trust.
"Cooperation at sea between the two countries, as maritime powers, is natural and necessary... Today, when the President is in India, three ships of the Indian Navy are participating in naval exercises in the Philippines for the first time. They were also joined by an Indian hydrographic vessel," Modi said.
Philippine President, in his turn, emphasized the importance of such strategic partnership for his country.
"Today, our relationship enters a new epoch as Prime Minister Modi and I formally launched a strategic partnership between the Philippines and India. For the Philippines, this is a momentous decision for we take a very considered path to such elevated partnerships. Today, India becomes only the fifth strategic partner for the Philippines," Marcos said.
Philippine President arrived in India on Monday and will stay in the country until August 8. It is expected that during Marcos’ visit, he will also meet with Indian President Droupadi Murmu and other officials. In Bangalore, a city known for its role in information technology, Marcos is scheduled to meet with CEOs of Indian companies and take part in business events.
