For the first time, India has confirmed that it discussing the US tariffs with the other BRICS nations.
India remains in touch with its BRICS counterparts on issues of “shared interests”, Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) Spokesman Randhir Jaiswal told a media briefing in New Delhi on Thursday.
The MEA Spokesperson was reacting to a question on the Brazilian President Lula Inacio Lula Da Silva’s remarks about convening a virtual BRICS meeting to craft a “joint response” to US tariffs.

“On the question of what President Lula spoke about with regards to a virtual meeting, India as you know as a member of the BRICS group, we continue to remain in touch with the member countries to discuss issues of shared interest,” Jaiswal informed reporters.
Brazil and India have been slapped with one of the highest tariff rates of 50% by the US, partly due to their affiliation with the BRICS grouping.
While the current tariffs on Indian imports entering the U.S. stands at 25%, an additional 25% tariff has been announced from 27 August over India’s imports of Russian oil.
Lula said in a televised address this week that he would convene a BRICS teleconference to discuss what could be done.

“That’s how we are going to try and find alternatives so that the United States learns that democracy, commercial respect and multilateralism matter to us and should matter to them too. The gamble that the American government is making might not work out for them,” Lula said.
In recent days, Lula held a series of telephone call with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, President Vladimir Putin and President Xi Jinping against the backdrop of US tariffs against the BRICS nations.
During the call between Lula and Modi on 7 August, both leaders discussed “exchanged views on various regional and global issues of mutual interest”, an Indian readout said.
