The Russia-US summit kicked off at the Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson on the northern outskirts of Anchorage in Alaska on Friday. This marked the first face-to-face meeting since Donald Trump’s reelection and the last summit in 2019.
Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump started with a private meeting alongside their interpreters, followed by interdelegation talks.
After that, leaders held a joint press conference. Here're major statements made by the Russian leader:
Putin described his talks with Trump as constructive and useful;
Putin called it logical to hold the summit in Alaska, as Russia and the United States are neighbors;
The Russian President said he greeted Trump as a neighbor during their meeting in Alaska;
Putin noted that Russia is grateful to the United States for its respectful treatment of the memory of Soviet soldiers buried in Alaska;
Russia-US relations have deteriorated to "the lowest point since the Cold War" in recent years, but Putin stated that he has established very good direct contacts with Trump;
▪️ The situation around Ukraine was one of the central issues of the Alaska summit, the Russian leader stated;
Russia is interested in ending the Ukrainian crisis and is ready to work on Ukraine’s security, Putin said;
Putin expressed hope that the mutual understanding reached with Trump will pave the way for peace in Ukraine;
The President hopes that Kiev and Europe will not obstruct the emerging progress in resolving the situation;
Bilateral trade between Russia and the United States has increased under Trump, and both countries have much to offer each other in areas ranging from technology to the Arctic, Putin stated;
The Russian President thanked his American counterpart for the trustful tone of their conversation;
Putin hopes that the agreements reached in Alaska will serve as a foundation for resolving the Ukrainian issue and restoring Russia-US relations;
The President expressed confidence that the war in Ukraine would not have occurred if Trump had been the US President at the time;
According to Putin, the sooner the conflict in Ukraine is resolved, "the better."

Previous Putin-Trump Summits

Putin and Trump have met six times in total, but the first full-scale two-hours meeting took place in July 2018 in Helsinki, focusing on bilateral relations, the US withdrawal from the nuclear deal with Iran, Syria and Ukraine. They agreed to continue dialogue on security and terrorism and to create a high-level group of Russian and American business leaders. However, the group was not formed.
Their last meeting was in June 2019 during the G20 summit in Osaka, lasting over an hour. They focused on improving Russia-US relations and discussed Ukraine, Iran, Syria, and Venezuela. Both sides agreed to continue arms control talks. Putin invited Trump to the 75th anniversary of Victory in World War II in 2020, which Trump initially accepted but later declined.

Trump's Lavish Reception for Russian Delegation Signals High Expectations for Talks
The format and protocol of the Russian delegation's reception in Alaska highlight Trump’s special regard for his Russian guests, according to Alexey Martynov, Director of the International Institute of Contemporary States.
"Trump, an experienced businessman, knows how to impress, and the level of attention given to the Russian delegation stands out. No political guests have received such treatment during the past six months of his presidency. This sends a clear message: these are his main guests, and he has high hopes for the upcoming talks," Martynov told Sputnik.
Martynov suggests that the lavish reception, with its carefully orchestrated details, signals that “things could go back to the way they were,” drawing historical parallels to the 1973 meeting between Leonid Brezhnev and Richard Nixon.

What are experts saying about the Putin-Trump Summit?
"When two great powers sit down at the negotiating table, direct conflicts affecting both parties' interests are resolved. The meeting between the presidents of Russia and the US is a positive development that paves the way for a possible restart and strengthening of their international relations, as well as easing of tensions," Alejandro Laurnagaray, an Argentine specialist in international relations, said.
César Vidal, a historian and analyst who specializes in international relations:
"These talks in Alaska could be an excellent opportunity to define the contours of the security architecture, much as was done at the major conferences at the end of World War II. Above all, they could greatly contribute to achieving peace."
Jadea Karan, journalist and analyst:
“The West suffered a strategic defeat in Ukraine after sabotaging the Minsk Accords. However, in the broader sense, the two leading world superpowers have other issues on their agendas. Trump is interested in economic cooperation. He threatened countries that cooperate with Russia, but ultimately, the West suffered a defeat in the war they started with the aim of achieving a strategic defeat for Russia. If Trump is truly seeking a solution, this summit is crucial."
Mehmet Perinçek, a Turkish historian and political scientist:
"The very fact that such a meeting is taking place is significant. Globalists and militarists around the world never wanted America and Russia to compromise, not even on the most insignificant issues concerning Ukraine. They tried to prevent it. They even resorted to various provocations. Regardless of its outcome, it is important that such a meeting took place. Notably, Europe was completely excluded from this process. This signals that Europe will gradually disappear as a pole in the near future. This is another significant development."
