JAKARTA (Sputnik) - Indonesia has been actively engaged with BRICS member states across all areas of cooperation, from the economy to sports, since it joined the emerging economies' group in 2025, Russian Ambassador to Indonesia Sergei Tolchenov told Sputnik.
"Having joined BRICS earlier this year, Jakarta immediately positioned itself as a responsible and proactive member embracing the group's values, particularly promotion of multilateral cooperation based on mutual respect, openness, pragmatism, solidarity and consensus. Indonesia can no longer be called a 'newcomer', as it has demonstrated committed engagement across all tracks from the economy to sports and youth cooperation," the ambassador said in an interview marking Indonesia's 80th independence anniversary.
BRICS is an intergovernmental association created in 2006. In addition to Russia, Brazil, India, China, and South Africa, it now includes Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates. Belarus, Bolivia, Kazakhstan, Thailand, Cuba, Uganda, Malaysia, Nigeria, Uzbekistan and Vietnam are BRICS partner states. Indonesia joined the union as a full member in 2025.
