SEOUL (Sputnik) - North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has called for a fundamental revision of the Asian nation's military strategy and a drastic expansion of its nuclear stockpile, the state-run Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported on Tuesday.
The security environment around North Korea is getting "more serious day by day," he said, prompting the country to "make a radical and swift change in the existing military theory and practice and rapid expansion of nuclearization."
Kim was speaking during a visit to a destroyer, Choe Hyon, on Monday, the report said. He met with the navy commander and was briefed on the weapons testing and the construction of a third Choe Hyon-class new-type multi-mission destroyer, KCNA said.

The North Korean leader called for continued efforts to achieve "continuous, significant, and epoch-making transformations" in the country's navy, which he praised for safeguarding its sovereignty. He said that a major goal was to arm the navy with nuclear weapons so that it could serve as a war deterrent.

Kim stressed that enhancing the operational capabilities of the naval forces was a paramount state task that could not be delayed.
On Monday, South Korea and the United States kicked off an annual joint military exercise, codenamed Ulchi Freedom Shield. Seoul and Washington emphasized that practicing responses to threats from North Korea remains their main priority. North Korean Defense Minister No Kwang Chol strongly condemned these "provocative actions" and warned the allies about the negative consequences they would entail.
