BEIJING, August 21 (Sputnik) - China advocates for renewing joint Wakhan Corridor patrolling with Afghanistan as soon as possible, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said on Thursday.
On Wednesday, the minister met with Afghan Interior Minister Sirajuddin Haqqani to discuss bilateral cooperation in various fields.
"China backs the swift resumption of joint patrols in the Wakhan Corridor to promote peace and stability in the border areas," Wang was quoted as saying by the Chinese Foreign Ministry.
During the meeting, the minister also expressed hope that Kabul would take decisive steps to crack down on the East Turkestan Islamic Movement (also known as the Turkestan Islamic Party, banned in Russia for terrorism), and other international terrorist groups to ensure the security of bilateral cooperation between the nations.
Wang added that Beijing continued to pursue a just policy regarding Afghanistan through international mechanisms, as well as to oppose to groundless repressions and freezing of the country's assets.
The Wakhan Corridor is a mountainous area in northeastern Afghanistan that links the country to China's Xinjiang and borders Tajikistan and Pakistan.
