Russia Rejects Romania's Protest Over Drone Incident as Far-Fetched, Unfounded

Russian Ambassador to Bucharest Vladimir Lipaev dismissed as far-fetched and unfounded Romania's protest over an alleged airspace violation by a drone, citing a lack of objective evidence, the Russian Embassy in Romania said on Monday.
On Sunday, Lipaev was summoned to the Romanian Foreign Ministry. The ministry issued the protest following a report from Romania's defense ministry of a brief airspace violation by a drone on Saturday evening, which it stated did not pose an immediate threat to public safety. Romanian Foreign Minister Oana Toiu did not provide evidence directly linking the drone to Russia.
"On September 13 of this year, the Romanian Ministry of Defense detected another unidentified aerial object in its airspace and was quick to identify it as a Russian drone. On September 14, the Romanian Foreign Ministry summoned the Russian ambassador to lodge a ‘strong protest.’ However, during the conversation, no concrete or convincing answer was given to any of the questions raised about the identification of the drone that allegedly entered Romanian airspace. In the absence of any objective confirmation regarding the aircraft's nationality, the protest from the Romanian side was dismissed as far-fetched and unfounded," the statement read on Telegram.
The ambassador said that all evidence indicated the incident was a "deliberate provocation by the Kiev regime." He said that Ukraine, "fearing an imminent military collapse and accountability for its actions," was attempting to draw other European states into a dangerous military confrontation with Russia.
In response to the increasing tensions, NATO has enhanced its monitoring of Romanian airspace, deploying additional early warning systems. The Romanian parliament has also recently passed legislation authorizing the military to shoot down drones that violate its airspace.
On September 10, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said that "dangerous" Russian drones had been shot down over Poland, but did not provide any evidence. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen later stated that more than ten drones were involved in the incident. Russian charge d'affaires in Poland Andrey Ordash told Sputnik that Warsaw had not provided any evidence of the drones' alleged Russian origin.
