Russia supposes that digital currencies may be a promising financial tool, Russia's G20 Sherpa Svetlana Lukash told RIA Novosti.
"For Russia, this is seen as one of the promising tools. It is important to address all the necessary elements that need to be resolved," Lukash said on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly.
The idea of developing international standards for the circulation of cryptocurrencies is "absolutely right," she opined.
"Approaches to understanding, regulating, and managing digital currency issues have been discussed particularly eagerly in the G20 over the past two years. But a lot depends on national approaches. About 80 countries are introducing some regulatory elements into their legislation in one way or another regarding the issuance of digital currencies and the circulation of crypto assets," Lukash said.
Russia's sherpa also noted that at the same time, the United States has adopted regulation on these issues, which goes in a slightly different direction. For example, the release of crypto assets will be possible from private companies, and not from the state, which will serve as a stumbling block in the common approaches to this issue within the G20 and other organizations, she added.
"This needs to be discussed, all countries need to speak the same language when it comes to a new area of financial regulation. First of all, we must act in the interests of our own country's economy. This issue is extremely relevant for Russia, our Central Bank is still determining its approaches and continues to develop regulations. We need to talk about this issue a little bit later, when we start using these tools in full force," Lukash stated.
Russia needs to understand how to converge its approaches with those of the US, which is a matter of relevant platforms and a dialogue between the central banks, the sherpa concluded.
