The Indian High Commission in London has condemned an act of vandalism targeting a statue of independence leader Mahatma Gandhi (1869–1948) in London.
The memorial was defaced with anti-India slogans just days before the United Nations’ International Day of Non-Violence, observed annually on 2 October, Gandhi’s birthday.
"The High Commission of India in London is deeply saddened and strongly condemns the shameful act of vandalism of the statue of Mahatma Gandhi at Tavistock Square in London. This is not just vandalism, but a violent attack on the idea of nonviolence, three days before the international day of nonviolence, and on the legacy of the Mahatma," the diplomatic mission wrote in a statement issued on X.
The bronze statue, created by sculptor Fredda Brilliant, was unveiled in Tavistock Square in 1968. It commemorates Gandhi’s time studying law at nearby University College London. The monument depicts Gandhi in the final years of his life, seated cross-legged in a meditative pose.
