Israel to Control Over Half of Gaza in Trump Peace Plan's 1st Phase - Reports
TEL AVIV (Sputnik) - The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) will control 53% of the Gaza Strip territory in the initial phase of US President Donald Trump’s peace plan, the Ynet news portal reported on Thursday.
This area is 4% smaller than the boundary outlined in Trump’s original "yellow line," according to the report.
As part of the agreement, Israel will also withdraw troops from Gaza City, Ynet reported.
The deal with the Palestinian Hamas movement excludes the release of terrorists involved in the October 7, 2023 attacks, as well as individuals considered leaders of Palestinian terror, according to a source cited by Ynet.
"The agreement does not include the release of the Nukhba terrorists who participated in the October 7 massacre… The four ‘aces’ whose release Hamas demanded, such as Marwan Barghouti, will not be freed," the source said.
On September 29, Trump unveiled a 20-point plan to resolve the Gaza conflict. The proposal calls, among other things, for an immediate ceasefire and the release of hostages within 72 hours. The plan also stipulates that the Hamas movement and other factions must renounce their involvement in governing Gaza, which will be entrusted to a "technocratic, apolitical Palestinian committee" overseen by an international board headed by Trump.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he would convene a government meeting on Thursday to approve the agreement.
According to Ynet, the narrow cabinet of ministers for political affairs and security is scheduled to meet on Thursday at 3 p.m. local time (12:00 GMT) to approve the agreement. An hour later, the deal will be presented for approval in the government’s plenary session.
