MOSCOW (Sputnik) - Russian President Vladimir Putin called the situation surrounding US President Donald Trump's announcement of the resumption of nuclear testing a serious issue.
He further instructed to gather information, conduct an analysis at the Security Council site, and submit proposals regarding the possible start of work to prepare for nuclear tests.
"Yes, indeed, this is a serious issue," Putin said at a meeting with permanent members of the Russian Security Council.
Last week, Trump said that he instructed the Department of War to immediately resume nuclear testing. He then specified that his order was due to "others doing testing" and it was "appropriate" for the US to keep up.
Russian Ambassador to the United States Alexander Darchiev sent a telegram to Russia regarding clarification of Trump's statements, the Russian President added.

The Russian Security Council analyzed statements made in US ruling circles regarding nuclear tests, Putin also said.
Defence Minister Andrei Belousov stated that Washington is actively expanding its strategic offensive capabilities. In light of this, he has called for immediate preparations for nuclear tests at the Novaya Zemlya test site.
"We must focus not only on the statements and pronouncements of politicians and American officials but, above all, on the actions of the United States of America. And these actions clearly demonstrate Washington's active increase in strategic offensive weapons," Belousov said at a meeting.
A possible US rejection of the moratorium on nuclear tests may be a step towards destroying the system of global strategic stability, the Defence minister stressed, adding that the United States is going to deploy missiles in the Asia-Pacific region and Europe, the flight time of which from Germany to central Russia will be 6-7 minutes.
