Afghanistan Seeks India’s Help in Addressing Agricultural Needs
New Delhi will work towards establishing an 'Afghanistan-India Research Centre' to address Kabul's needs concerning scientific research on agricultural issues, an Afghan readout said.
Afghanistan has sought India’s support in addressing issues related to agriculture, which include irrigation, livestock, export of agricultural products, and import of mechanized agricultural equipment, according to a readout of the meeting between Afghanistan’s Minister of Agriculture Mawlawi Attaullah Omari and Karan Yadav, India's top diplomat in Kabul.
Yadav has been recently appointed as
India's Charge d'Affaires in Kabul following New Delhi's decision to
restore its embassy in Afghanistan last month.
They emphasized the resumption of full-fledged trade between the two countries and implementation of agricultural infrastructure projects, the Afghan readout said.
Omari said that Afghanistan has been severely impacted by climate change and drought, which have impacted the quality and quantity of its agricultural products, it said.
The Afghan official sought cooperation with India to conduct scientific research to develop "climate-resistant crop varieties", the Afghan statement said.
For his part, the Indian diplomat assured that India will work towards establishing an 'Afghanistan-India Research Center' and implement new projects, according to Kabul. Yadav also promised that India would carry out capacity-building programmes to train Afghan agriculture specialists, it said.
Further, Omari also requested New Delhi's help in equipping laboratories, building check dams, and strengthening animal health and livestock quality-control laboratories. The minister also called for expediting visas for Afghan traders exporting agricultural products to India.
"The Charge d'Affaires assured that the discussed issues will be pursued through diplomatic channels and implemented soon," the Afghan readout said.
