BEIJING, (Sputnik) - China opposes external interference in Venezuela's internal affairs, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian said on Wednesday.
"China opposes any actions that contradict the UN Charter’s purposes and principles or violate other states’ sovereignty and security, as well as interference by external forces in Venezuela's internal affairs under any pretext," Lin told a briefing.
China urges all parties to uphold Latin America and the Caribbean as a zone of peace and prevent further escalation, he said.
Tensions between Caracas and Washington have significantly intensified amid a sustained deployment by the Pentagon of naval, air, and land assets throughout the Caribbean, including the USS Gerald Ford aircraft carrier. Washington justifies its military presence in the region with the fight against drug trafficking.
On November 3, US President Donald Trump expressed his opinion that President Nicolas Maduro's days as Venezuela's leader were numbered, while assuring that the US had no plans to wage war against the republic. Caracas viewed these actions as a provocation aimed at destabilizing the region and as a violation of international agreements on the demilitarized and nuclear-free status of the Caribbean.
