Bangladesh Election Commission Demands Increased Security for Staff Ahead of 12 February Elections
The Election Commission of Bangladesh has requested increased security for its chairman, other commission members, and officials, as unrest has flared up again in the country, the Bangladesh news agency BSS reported.
The commission's appeal to the police came after unidentified armed men shot and killed Sharif Osman Hadi, a candidate in the upcoming parliamentary elections on 12th February next year, and one of the leaders of last year's street protests.
"The Election Commission sent a letter to the Inspector General of Police requesting comprehensive security for the chairman, members, and senior officials of the Election Commission Secretariat," BSS reported.
The commission also asked for additional security measures at its regional offices ahead of the national elections, as two of them were attacked by unidentified assailants following the announcement of the upcoming election schedule.
On Thursday, it was announced that parliamentary elections in Bangladesh will be held on 12th February. On Saturday, the government announced the launch of a nationwide security operation called "Devil Hunt 2" amid escalating law and order issues and promised to issue firearm licences to election candidates to ensure their safety.
