Many G20 countries believe that without South Africa's participation, the organization is not functioning at its full capacity, Svetlana Lukash, Russia's G20 sherpa, told RIA Novosti.
"Many countries have noted that this situation needs to be resolved so that the G20 can function at its full capacity and make decisions by consensus," Lukash said.
The US assumed the G20 2026 presidency on December 1. The first meeting of G20 representatives under the US presidency took place in Washington on December 15-16.
US President Donald Trump will host the G20 Leaders’ Summit in Miami without South Africa on December 14-15, 2026.
The US skipped the G20 summit in Johannesburg in November 2025 because the South African government "refuses to acknowledge or address the horrific Human Right Abuses endured by Afrikaners," Trump said.
