Iraq Rejects Any Foreign Interference in Country's Politics Amid US Threats
The Iraqi presidential administration has spoken out against any foreign interference in the country's politics amid US President Donald Trump's threats to cut off aid to Iraq if Nouri al-Maliki is elected prime minister.
On Tuesday, Trump said that the US will not provide assistance to Iraq if al-Maliki is elected prime minister, as last time the politician was in power "the Country descended into poverty and total chaos."
"The Presidency of the Republic reaffirms its rejection of any form of external interference in Iraq’s political affairs, stressing that all domestic matters are an inherent sovereign right to be determined exclusively by Iraqis, in accordance with their free will, the Constitution and the country’s democratic system, grounded in elections as the genuine expression of the people’s choice," the presidential office said in a statement on Thursday.
The statement noted that respect for national sovereignty is "fundamental to state-building and the consolidation of political stability, particularly during the process of forming a new government," which will be based on the results of the elections held last November.
Al-Maliki served as Iraq's prime minister from 2006 to 2014.
