Russia has not received any official statements from New Delhi indicating that India plans to halt purchases of Russian oil, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Monday.
Speaking to journalists in Moscow, Peskov addressed reports following US President Donald Trump’s announcement of a new trade deal with India. Under the agreement, the United States will apply a reduced reciprocal tariff of 18% on Indian goods, the lowest rate among countries in the Indian subcontinent.
“So far, we have not heard any statements from Delhi on this matter,” Peskov said, responding to questions about whether the trade deal included commitments by India to cut back on imports of Russian energy.
The comments come amid ongoing speculation about whether closer trade ties between Washington and New Delhi could affect India’s long-standing energy relationship with Moscow. India has significantly increased its purchases of discounted Russian crude in recent years, making Russia one of its top oil suppliers.
Peskov emphasised that Moscow intends to continue strengthening bilateral relations with India, regardless of foreign policy changes.
“We intend to continue developing our bilateral relations with Delhi in every possible way, which is exactly what we are doing,” he said.
