US Aims to Link Peace Talks to Economic Cooperation: Kremlin
16:42 26.02.2026 (Updated: 18:29 26.02.2026) The United States insists on linking the negotiation track for a settlement in Ukraine with the track on economic cooperation with Russia, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Thursday.
"No, that is not the case. The American side continues to insist on fully linking these two [tracks]," Peskov told reporters when asked whether economic discussions with the US would mean a decoupling from the Ukraine settlement issue.
The summit between Russia and Ukraine should wrap up all the work, Peskov stated.
"Listen, if we are talking about a summit, it must finalize the results of the work. It must put the finishing touches on all the work and bring it to a definitive conclusion," Peskov told reporters, stressing that Russia's position on Ukraine remians consistent and unchanged.
Efforts towards a Ukrainian settlement continue, but Moscow is getting very mixed signals from Ukrainian representatives, the Kremlin official noted.
When asked whether nuclear-related issues would be discussed at the new round of
negotiations on Ukraine, the spokemsman underscored that this matter cannot be ignored.
"Everyone is continuing their work, including the American negotiators - the US side - to whom we are very grateful for these sustained efforts," Peskov noted.
Meanwhile, Peskov warned that trying to ascertain the current phase of negotiations on Ukraine—or making any predictions about them—would be a serious error.
He also confirmed that Kirill Dmitriev, who heads the RDIF and serves as the Kremlin's special envoy for international economic cooperation, is continuing his contacts with Washington through the relevant economic working group.
"Dmitriev continues his work on the economic track and maintains various contacts," Peskov told reporters, adding that he cannot say for sure now whether he is presently in Geneva.
Tensions around Belarus are being stoked by unfriendly nations, but steps are actively being taken within the Union State framework to beef up security, Peskov noted.
"Belarus clearly faces an unfriendly environment, with actions deliberately aimed at provoking tensions around Belarus. Our Belarusian friends and allies are taking appropriate measures to ensure their own security, and these efforts are also being coordinated within the framework of the Union State," Peskov told reporters.
Ukraine's actions involving the Druzhba oil pipeline are tantamount to sabotage, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Thursday, speaking to journalists.
"We see a perfectly clear and consistent position from Budapest and Bratislava as they defend their economic interests. In contrast, we see sabotage from the Kiev regime," Peskov said, commenting on the Druzhba oil pipeline situation.
