Israel Launches ‘Preemptive Strike’ Against Iran: What's Known so Far
13:32 28.02.2026 (Updated: 15:22 28.02.2026) Israeli army has initiated a strike against Iran "to remove threats against the State of Israel", the nation’s Defense Minister Israel Katz announced, adding a special and immediate state of emergency has been declared across the country.
Thick smoke can be seen near central Tehran, around the Ministry of Interior, Sputnik correspondent reports. The sound of fighter jets can also be heard in many areas in the northeast and east of the city.
Around 30 targets across Iran have been attacked, including the home of the Iranian leader and the intelligence headquarters of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, according to Yedioth Ahronoth;
Iran is preparing for retaliation and "a crushing response" against Israel, Tasnim reports;
Iranian President Pezeshkian was unharmed in Israel's attack, Iranian Press TV reports;
Trump confirms US started "major combat operations" in Iran;
Explosions reported in Gulf countries hosting US bases;
Iran's Ministry of Foreign Affairs has called on all UN member states to condemn the aggression of the US and Israel;
Iranian authorities have stated that all assets in the region linked to Israel and the US are considered "legitimate military targets.
