India inducted three indigenous warships, with INS Dunagiri featuring the India-Russia BrahMos missile, significantly enhancing its long-range precision strike capability.
In a major boost to India’s maritime capabilities and indigenous defence manufacturing, the Indian Navy on Monday inducted three warships—INS Dunagiri, INS Sanshodhak, and INS Agray—built at Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Ltd in West Bengal’s Kolkata city.
INS Dunagiri, the fifth Project 17A stealth frigate, represents a significant leap in design, stealth, and combat capability, and is equipped with advanced systems including the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile, MF-STAR radar, and MRSAM air defence system, making it a potent multi-mission platform.
With nearly 75% indigenous content, Dunagiri highlights the synergy between domestic capability and strategic partnerships, particularly the India-Russia BrahMos programme.
Meanwhile, INS Sanshodhak, the final Survey Vessel (Large) in a four-ship series, aims to enhance the Navy’s hydrographic and oceanographic capabilities with modern survey equipment.
The 3,400-tonne ship is equipped with advanced systems such as autonomous underwater vehicles, remotely operated vehicles, and digital sonar technologies.
With over 80% indigenous content, INS Sanshodhak is expected to play a crucial role in navigation safety, oceanographic research, and maritime domain awareness in the Indian Ocean Region.
INS Agray, the fourth Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft (ASW SWC), further strengthens India’s underwater warfare capabilities.
Built with more than 80% indigenous content, the vessel is equipped with lightweight torpedoes, indigenous rocket launchers, and shallow water sonar systems, improving underwater threat detection and engagement.
As one of the largest Indian naval platforms powered by waterjets, it is designed for anti-submarine operations, mine warfare, and coastal surveillance.
The warships were designed by the Indian Navy’s Warship Design Bureau, with extensive participation from Indian industry and MSMEs.
The three vessels are expected to be formally commissioned into the Indian Navy in the coming months, following final trials and crew familiarisation.
Together, these inductions mark a major step in strengthening India’s naval preparedness across surface, survey, and anti-submarine domains, while deepening indigenous shipbuilding eco-system and reinforcing the Navy’s push towards modernisation and self-reliance under Aatmanirbhar Bharat.
