Afghanistan Releases First Archaeological Report, Uncovers 42 New Sites in One Year

More than 40 archaeological sites were discovered in Afghanistan during the past year, according to the local calendar, which ended on March 20.
About 2,000 finds were transferred to museums and laboratories, and approximately the same number were restored, the press service of the Ministry of Information and Culture reported on social media.
"Last year, 42 archaeological sites were discovered and registered, and 1,890 historical objects were restored and preserved. During this period, 1,953 artifacts were transferred to the National Museum and National Laboratory, as well as to museums in Logar and Nangarhar provinces," the statement read.
Of the artifacts, 291 were recovered from an archaeological site located in Logar province at the Mes Aynak copper mine, which is being developed by a Chinese company. 142 artifacts were discovered and confiscated from passengers at Kabul Airport who were attempting to smuggle them abroad. All were transferred to the National Museum in Kabul.
The ministry also stated that excavations at the Bala Hissar fortress in Kabul yielded 648 artifacts, including ceramics, coins, metal, clay, and stone objects.
