Senior officials from India and China met for the 35th meeting of Working Mechanism for Consultation & Coordination on India-China Border Affairs (WMCC) in Beijing on 27 May, said a readout by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Thursday. The Indian delegation was led by Sujit Ghosh, Joint Secretary (East Asia) at the MEA, while the Chinese team was led by Hou Yanqi, Director-General of the Boundary and Oceanic Affairs Department at the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The two sides discussed issues pertaining to delimitation, border management, mechanism building and cross-border cooperation, the Indian readout said.It said that the Indian side called for an "early meeting" of the next Expert Level Mechanism on Trans-border Rivers.Officials from both sides also agreed to maintain regular exchanges and contacts at diplomatic and military levels through various mechanisms, including those that were agreed as part of outcomes of 24th round of Special Representative (SR) level talks on the India-China boundary question co-chaired by Indian National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in Delhi last August.During this week’s meeting, officials also agreed to work on making “substantive discussions” on the next SR-level talks likely to be held in China. After a four-year military standoff in eastern Ladakh from April 2020 to October 2024, both the Asian giants agreed to a disengagement pact followed by a breakthrough meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Xi Jinping on the margins of the BRICS Summit in Kazan in October 2024.At present, both the sides are involved in efforts to deescalate the situation and eventually move towards the de-induction process to entirely normalise the situation in the Eastern Ladakh region along the Line of Actual Control (LAC).The resolution of the Ladakh standoff has paved the way for gradual normalisation of ties, including high-level exchanges, resumption of flight connectivity and the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra.

India's Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said that the meeting between India and Chinese officials on border issues was "constructive and forward-looking".
"The two sides reviewed the situation in the India-China border areas. They expressed satisfaction with the progress made in maintaining peace and tranquility in the border areas, which has enabled progress towards gradual normalization of bilateral relations," MEA said.
The two sides discussed issues pertaining to delimitation, border management, mechanism building and cross-border cooperation, the Indian readout said.
It said that the Indian side called for an "early meeting" of the next Expert Level Mechanism on Trans-border Rivers.
Officials from both sides also agreed to maintain regular exchanges and contacts at diplomatic and military levels through various mechanisms, including those that were agreed as part of outcomes of 24th round of Special Representative (SR) level talks on the India-China boundary question co-chaired by Indian National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in Delhi last August.
During this week’s meeting, officials also agreed to work on making “substantive discussions” on the next SR-level talks likely to be held in China.
