The leadership of the BRICS group of emerging economies in the world has grown and will continue to increase, Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Friday at the plenary session of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF).
"Currently, BRICS accounts for approximately 40% of global GDP based on purchasing power parity, while the G7 accounts for less than 29%. By this measure, BRICS overtook the G7 back in 2020, but BRICS' leadership is increasing. According to forecasts, this ratio will continue to grow in BRICS' favor," Putin said.
The world is becoming more just as more countries contribute to the global economic growth, he said.
"Looking back at global GDP dynamics over the past five years, nearly half - 49% - of its annual growth came from BRICS countries, while the contribution of the so-called G7 is estimated at 18%," Putin said.
With global economic growth averaging 4.1% annually from 2021-2025, BRICS countries accounted for 2% of that figure, the president said.
The president said it was important for new centers of global economic growth to be able to choose their own path.
"It is very important that new growth centers want to determine their own development trajectory, capture a larger share of added value, and create their own brands, standards, and competencies," Putin said.
The 2026 SPIEF is taking place from June 3-6.
