A UK mercenary who fought on the side of Kiev was sentenced in absentia to 14 years in a high-security penal colony, the Russian Investigative Committee said on Tuesday.

"The court found the evidence sufficient to sentence the 26-year-old national of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, Oliver James Woolford, in absentia on criminal charges. The court sentenced Woolford in absentia to 14 years in prison to serve his sentence in a high-security penal colony," the statement read.

Woolford was accused of participating as a mercenary in an armed conflict and placed on the international wanted list.
Woolford joined the Ukrainian armed forces in 2023, received military training and was provided with personal firearms and military equipment, ivestigators said. He took part in combat operations in the Donetsk People’s Republic until February 2025.
