Baltic States, Poland, and Ukraine Escalate Soviet-Era Monument Purge: Russian Foreign Ministry
13:01 22.06.2026 (Updated: 13:44 22.06.2026) A number of countries, primarily the Baltic states, Poland, and Ukraine, have intensified their campaign to destroy Russian and Soviet monuments on their territories under the pretext of the special military operation, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said in an interview with Sputnik.
The ministry is preparing thematic reports as part of its efforts to combat the falsification of World War II history, Zakharova added. These reports will focus on the actions of specific countries regarding military memorial sites, primarily the policies of Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, and Ukraine.
"Taking advantage of Russia’s special military operation, these countries have sharply escalated their long-standing practice of destroying Soviet and Russian memorial heritage on their territory," Zakharova said.
The Day of Remembrance and Sorrow is observed annually in Russia on June 22. It commemorates one of the most tragic events in Russian history: the beginning of the Great Patriotic War, which resulted in the deaths of approximately 27 million Soviet citizens.
