Russia has observed a minute of silence in memory of those who died in the Great Patriotic War. The moment of remembrance was broadcast on major national television channels at 12:15 Moscow time.
Russian President Vladimir Putin laid a wreath of red roses and carnations at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. The ceremony took place near the Kremlin walls in Alexander Garden in central Moscow.
Memorial events were held across the country, spanning from Vladivostok in the Far East to Donetsk. Commemorative ceremonies also took place abroad, including in Armenia, Moldova, and Israel.
June 22 is marked in Russia as the Day of Remembrance and Sorrow. It honors one of the most tragic dates in the country’s history—the beginning of the Great Patriotic War—which claimed the lives of an estimated 27 million Soviet citizens.
