Slovakia PM Fico Supports EU Bid to Improve Ties With Russia
Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico has backed European Council President Antonio Costa's intention to improve contacts with Russia, adding that "several" EU prime ministers share this view.
On June 19, Costa said that the European Union should establish direct contact with Moscow to be able to listen to the Russian side. His efforts have sparked debate over who should represent the EU in any resumed dialogue and when it should occur.
"I support the president of the European Council and welcome the fact that his team has moved in this direction. There are several prime ministers who share this view, and I am probably one of the most vocal among them," Fico told US media.
He did not specify which leaders he meant.
Russia has repeatedly said it is ready to pursue a negotiated solution to the Ukrainian crisis, building on the understandings reached by Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump at the Anchorage summit.
