China Demands US Lift Cuba Blockade: Foreign Ministry
China calls on the United States to immediately end the blockade against Cuba and stop putting all forms of pressure on the country, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun said on Thursday.
"We call on the US side to immediately end the blockade of Cuba and all forms of coercion and pressure, as well as to cease violations of the Cuban people's right to existence and development," Guo told reporters.
China consistently opposes unlawful unilateral sanctions, which are not based on international law, and firmly supports Cuba in defending its state sovereignty and security, the spokesperson added.
On Tuesday, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that Washington was imposing sanctions against five Cuban entities that the US claims generate revenue for the Cuban state. The restrictions also targeted a distant relative of the Castro family.
The US has maintained an economic embargo against Cuba for more than six decades. The Cuban authorities consider the sanctions the primary cause of the country's economic difficulties and demand their complete lifting.
