Germany Expands NATO Missile Defence Footprint in Turkey
Germany has sent a Patriot air defence system to Turkey to replace a battery at the Kurecik base in the eastern province of Malatya as part of a NATO mission, the Turkish Defence Ministry said on Thursday.
"To strengthen NATO’s air defence system, a German Patriot system was deployed in Kurecik (Malatya) and assumed the duties of the US Patriot system on June 24, 2026," the ministry said in a statement.
The rotation was carried out to reinforce the alliance's air defencee capabilities. The Kurecik base in Malatya Province is a key element of NATO’s missile defences. The facility hosts an early-warning radar station.
In March, NATO has deployed an additional Patriot missile system to the southern Turkish province of Adana to protect the Incirlik air base, which hosts US and allied troops, according to Turkish defence ministry.
"In order to ensure the security of our airspace and our citizens, in addition to national-level measures taken, another Patriot system, assigned by Allied Air Command in Ramstein/Germany, is being deployed in Adana, alongside the existing Spanish Patriot system stationed there," Turkish Defence Ministry spokesman Zeki Akturk said.
Akturk said last week that a Patriot air defense system had been deployed to the southeastern Turkish province of Malatya to protect the Kurecik early warning radar station.
