France did not notify the Russian Embassy about the detention of the Deliver tanker, which was sailing from the Russian town of Primorsk, the Russian diplomatic mission told Sputnik on Thursday.
Earlier in the day, French President Emmanuel Macron said that the French naval forces had detained the Deliver oil tanker off the coast of Sicily, allegedly for violating maritime law.
"The French authorities did not notify the embassy about the detention of the Deliver oil tanker," the diplomatic mission said.
According to preliminary information, there are no Russian citizens among the crew of the tanker, the embassy added.
"This is yet another case of piracy," the embassy said, adding that France's detention of the tanker is illegal and unacceptable under international law.
