Venezuela's oil infrastructure did not seem to be affected by the powerful earthquake, Reuters reported on Thursday.
Earlier in the day, Venezuelan Acting President Delcy Rodriguez said that a series of powerful earthquakes in the country has damaged buildings, including residential ones, in Caracas, as well as in the states of Miranda, La Guaira, Aragua, Carabobo and Falcon. The Venezuelan authorities have declared a state of emergency and are conducting search and rescue operations.
A resident of Caracas told Sputnik that Internet and cell phone communications were intermittent in the Venezuelan capital following the earthquake.
"Cell reception and the internet are intermittent, messages are struggling to go through ... My home wired internet connection is not working either," the resident said.
Sturdily built houses in Caracas withstood the earthquake, while numerous shacks and buildings with structural defects collapsed, they added.
