Russian Rhythmic Gymnastics Team Withdraws From World Challenge Cup in Romania
The Russian national rhythmic gymnastics team has decided to withdraw from the World Challenge Cup taking place in Cluj-Napoca, Romania, from June 26 to 28, citing serious violation of competition regulations by the organisers.
The organisers informed the Russian delegation verbally that the Russian national flag would not be displayed and the national anthem would not be played in the event of victories by Russian gymnasts, Linar Ginatullin, press secretary for rhythmic gymnastics at the Russian Gymnastics Federation, said.
"This is a direct violation of the May decision by the World Gymnastics Executive Committee, under which Russian gymnasts were fully reinstated in their rights," Ginatullin said.
He added that the organizers' decision also contradicts the World Gymnastics Statute and updated provisions of the Olympic Charter aimed at protecting sport and athletes from political, governmental, social and economic pressure.
"Our national team is always ready to compete in tournaments where the requirements and regulations of World Gymnastics are respected," the press secretary said.
The Russian Gymnastics Federation said it would seek the unconditional implementation of World Gymnastics decisions through all available international legal mechanisms.
