Burundi is interested in harnessing the small modular reactor technology with the help of Russian state nuclear corporation Rosatom, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on Friday.
"Of course, this includes nuclear energy: nuclear power plants, small nuclear power plants, which many are interested in, including our Burundian friends," Lavrov told a press conference in the Burundian capital of Bujumbura after meeting with Burundian Foreign Minister Edouard Bizimana.
Lavrov came to Burundi as part of a working trip to Africa, after visiting Ethiopia, Niger and Mozambique. He said Burundi signed a memorandum on cooperation with Rosatom.
"Training of Burundians is already underway at relevant universities in Russia. They are training personnel for Burundi's future peaceful nuclear energy industry," Lavrov said.
Bizimana said Russia had expressed readiness to share its expertise in the peaceful use of nuclear energy.
The ministers also discussed outlooks for cooperation between Russian hydroelectricity company RusHydro and Burundi on hydropower projects in this landlocked African country.
