The Indian Navy has commissioned INS Mahendragiri, the sixth Project 17A stealth frigate, into its Eastern Fleet at a ceremony in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, in the presence of Defence Minister Shri Rajnath Singh, India's Ministry of Defence reports.
Built by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL), Mumbai, and designed by the Indian Navy’s Warship Design Bureau, the advanced warship carries more than 75% indigenous content, highlighting India’s growing capabilities in defence manufacturing and naval shipbuilding, the statement read.
INS Mahendragiri is designed to undertake a wide range of maritime missions, including air defence, anti-surface warfare, anti-submarine operations, surveillance, maritime interdiction and humanitarian assistance and disaster relief activities, the MoD said.
The 6,670-tonne frigate can reach speeds of up to 28 knots and features advanced stealth technology, modern sensors, network-enabled combat systems and integrated weapon platforms.
Its capabilities include the deployment of BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles, medium-range surface-to-air missiles, torpedoes, indigenous rocket launchers, electronic warfare systems and a Close-In Weapon System. The ship can also operate a multi-role helicopter.
Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said INS Mahendragiri represents India’s commitment to developing a self-reliant, technologically advanced and combat-ready Navy. He stated that the warship would enhance India’s blue-water capability and strengthen its maritime presence in the Indian Ocean Region.
Highlighting the importance of maritime security, Singh said the Indian Navy plays a key role in protecting national interests, trade routes, energy supplies and regional stability. He also praised the Navy’s response in humanitarian missions, anti-piracy operations and evacuation efforts, describing it as a first responder and trusted security partner in the Indo-Pacific.
Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral Krishna Swaminathan said the commissioning marked another major achievement in indigenous warship development. He highlighted improvements in construction efficiency, including reducing the time from launch to delivery from 63 months to 31 months and lowering the overall construction period from 95 months to 75 months.
Named after the Mahendragiri mountain range in the Eastern Ghats, the frigate symbolises strength and resilience. Built with contributions from more than 200 Indian industries, including MSMEs, the warship reflects the country’s expanding defence industrial base.
Joining the Eastern Fleet, INS Mahendragiri will strengthen India’s maritime combat capability and support the Navy’s vision of a future-ready force under the MAHASAGAR initiative.
