The Soyuz MS-28 spacecraft, carrying Russian cosmonauts Sergey Kud-Sverchkov and Sergey Mikayev, along with the US astronaut Christopher Williams, has fired its braking engines and deployed its parachute for landing in the Kazakh steppe, a Roscosmos representative told reporters on Sunday.
The maneuver is a standard procedure required for the spacecraft to deorbit and begin deceleration in Earth's atmosphere. The spacecraft will heat up to extreme temperatures, and after separation, the orbital and service modules will burn up in the atmosphere. The crew will return to Earth in the descent module.
The parachutes ensure a soft landing for the descent module. For a planned landing, the spacecraft's engines are first fired for braking, after which the parachutes slow the descent to ensure a safe approach to the ground for the crew.
Kud-Sverchkov, Mikayev and Williams had been aboard the International Space Station since November 27.
