India plans to harness artificial intelligence (AI) and wearable technology to monitor the health of military personnel and detect potential health risks at an early stage, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said on Wednesday.
Speaking during the virtual inauguration of the Department of Military Medicine at the Command Hospital in Lucknow, Singh said preventive healthcare plays a vital role in maintaining combat readiness and strengthening national security.
"The new department would serve as a centre for research and development, helping India prepare for emerging challenges driven by rapid technological advances," he said.
Singh also highlighted the growing importance of military medicine, noting that it focuses on the physical and psychological stresses experienced by personnel during combat and other operational environments.
The Defence Minister called for the development of an integrated system using AI, disease surveillance, wearable devices, physical fitness assessments and regular medical check-ups to identify and address health risks before they become serious.
