The US Senate has moved forward with a sweeping new sanctions package aimed at imposing 100% tariffs on countries buying Russian oil and gas, with India and China among the countries that could face economic consequences if the legislation becomes law.
The bipartisan bill would give President Donald Trump broad authority to impose additional penalties on Russia and on countries that remain major buyers of Russian oil and gas.
The legislation would also permit an additional 100% tariff on imports from the five largest purchasers of Russian crude oil and natural gas, as well as from countries identified as helping Moscow bypass energy-related sanctions.

"It's carefully crafted to make sure we are not hitting our allies and that we are hitting China and India. Let's be really blunt. China and India are the main culprits here. They purchase the vast majority of oil and gas," US Senator Richard Blumenthal said.
