President Prabowo Subianto has instructed the Finance Ministry and state railway operator PT Kereta Api Indonesia to begin developing the Trans-Kalimantan railway project.Around 73% of Kalimantan is Indonesian territory, but the island currently has no functioning railway network, meaning the proposed project would have to be developed from the ground up.He said potential investors are currently assessing the project and are expected to submit proposals. Jakarta is seeking both foreign and domestic investment to develop the railway.The project could strengthen connectivity across Indonesian Kalimantan while opening new opportunities for Russia–Indonesia economic and infrastructure cooperation.

Indonesia Discusses Kalimantan Railway Projects With Russia and China: Transport Minister
Indonesia is in discussions with investors from Russia and China over a proposed railway network across Kalimantan, Indonesian Transport Minister Dudi Purwagandhi said.
President Prabowo Subianto has instructed the Finance Ministry and state railway operator PT Kereta Api Indonesia to begin developing the Trans-Kalimantan railway project.
Around 73% of Kalimantan is Indonesian territory, but the island currently has no functioning railway network, meaning the proposed project would have to be developed from the ground up.
"China and Russia have expressed interest in the Trans-Kalimantan project. Communications with foreign investors have already begun," Purwagandhi said, as quoted by the Jakarta Globe.
He said potential investors are currently assessing the project and are expected to submit proposals. Jakarta is seeking both foreign and domestic investment to develop the railway.
The project could strengthen connectivity across Indonesian Kalimantan while opening new opportunities for Russia–Indonesia economic and infrastructure cooperation.
