South Korean President Calls for Peace Talks Resumption With North Korea
South Korean President Lee Jae-myung on Saturday called for renewed dialogue with North Korea, saying the two sides should work toward formally ending decades of conflict and replacing the fragile armistice on the Korean Peninsula with a lasting peace arrangement.
Speaking on the 81st anniversary of Korea’s liberation from Japanese colonial rule, Lee said his government would take steps toward ending the state of war and building a more stable peace framework on the peninsula.
“We will move toward ending the war and transforming the current unstable armistice system on the Korean Peninsula into a peace system,” Lee said.
The South Korean president urged both sides to abandon policies based on threats and confrontation and instead resume inter-Korean dialogue.
“Let us give up the intention of threatening each other and begin inter-Korean talks to bring an end to this war, which has continued for far too long,” Lee said. He added that such discussions could also explore effective ways to prevent further expansion of North Korea’s nuclear weapons program.
According to Lee, lasting peace on the Korean Peninsula could strengthen stability and cooperation across Northeast Asia and serve as an important step toward a region free from the threat of nuclear weapons.
He said South Korea wants to transform the energy currently devoted to hostility and confrontation into a force for peaceful coexistence and shared prosperity.
However, North Korea has repeatedly insisted that it has no intention of giving up its nuclear arsenal.
In September 2025, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un declared the issue of denuclearization “closed,” saying Pyongyang would never surrender its nuclear weapons.
Kim reinforced that position in March 2026, when he called for North Korea’s status as a nuclear-armed state to be made “completely irreversible.”
North Korea has also incorporated its nuclear status into domestic law. In September 2023, the country amended its constitution to include provisions supporting the rapid development of its nuclear forces.
