The Russian Foreign Ministry said on Tuesday that it lodged a strong protest with Japanese Ambassador to Russia Akira Muto over Tokyo's anti-Russian statements.
"On August 18, Japanese Ambassador to Russia Akira Muto was summoned to the Russian Foreign Ministry. Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Yuryevich Galuzin expressed a strong protest to the Japanese diplomat over the anti-Russian statements made by Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi and Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi regarding Russian President Vladimir Putin's visit to Iturup Island," the statement read.
The Russian Foreign Ministry informed the Japanese ambassador that Russia's sovereignty and jurisdiction over the southern Kuril Islands are inalienable.
"These territories were transferred to our country following the results of World War II, as enshrined in the relevant agreements of the allies and the UN Charter. Any attempts by Japan, directly or indirectly, to question this obvious reality are absolutely unacceptable and illegal," the ministry said.
Moscow reserves the right to take adequate countermeasures in connection with Japan's support for Kiev, as well as its adherence to the policy of the collective West, the ministry said.
